Some students think libraries are less necessary because almost everything can be searched online. But a search engine is not the same as a library. One gives results quickly; the other helps people think more carefully.
A good school library offers more than books. It gives quiet space, research guidance, reliable databases, and a place where students can exist without buying anything. Librarians also teach skills that algorithms do not: how to judge sources, ask better questions, and follow curiosity.
Of course, libraries need to change. Students want digital resources, comfortable study areas, and materials that reflect different backgrounds. A silent room full of outdated books will not inspire everyone.
But closing or underfunding libraries because the internet exists is a mistake. Online information is endless, but not always trustworthy.
A library is one of the few places in school where learning can feel self-directed. It reminds us that knowledge is not just searched; it is explored.
